The municipality of Kuortane is situated in the county of Western Finland, and in the province of South Ostrobothnia.

Kuortane makes a pleasant exception on the fringes of Southern Ostrobothnian plains. This is where the best preserved village scenery can be found. Lake Kuortane with its beaches that bring the Riviera to mind gives the area its scenic special features.

The name of Kuortane can be found in the land registry records for the first time in 1557. This is regarded as the starting point for the history of Kuortane. Slowly the population developed became well established and Kuortane developed into a typical southern Ostrobothnian agricultural municipality. Kuortane was known in the 18th and 19th centuries for its tar. Tar was called the black gold of that era and was much in demand from the navies of sea-faring nations. The handsome two-storey farmhouses with surrounding barns and sheds built in that time were witness to the economic well-being brought by the tar-making business. An exceptional number of these farmhouses typical to southern Ostrobothnia still exist in Kuortane, and they have become the hallmark of the municipality. During the last few decades economic life has gone through an important structural change from agriculture towards industrial and service industries , and a lot of the population have moved to larger centres. All this has of course required that the old farmhouses should be specially protected and looked after. Fortunately. the people of Kuortane have realized the importance of tradition and of preserving the work of previous generations.

Kuortane also lives in the present. This is obvious especially in the central village, where there are business and manufacturing complexes and a large residential area, this is also true in other villages. The municipality of Kuortane has of late invested especially in plots of land for industrial, commercial or for housing purposes. Attention has also been paid to the availability of municipal rented accommodation.

Public offices, schools, and health and care institutions in Kuortane have been modernized and are now up to modern standards. The latest pedagogical trends are being followed in both basic and adult education. The Kuortane high school specializes in physical education, and includes a nation-wide sports high school. The Kuortane Sports Institute co-operates with the school in the teaching programme.

Kuortane is probably best known today by its expanding Sports Institute that offers a variety of special services in sports, gymnastics and physical education. The institute was founded in 1950. It has functioned without a break, renewing itself and expanding to form an important national training centre for top athletes. Johan's Godfathers and Godmothers were: Salomon Wiitala and wife Margareta and student Johan Petter Snellman and Lady Gustava Snellman. Johan was Baptised on the 30th by H. R. Aspelin.

Note from the researcher, Bo Sundqvist: Snellman family have maybe come from Schweiz, some 100 years earlier. There have been some dna test made with Snellman's in Finland and Schweiz. I do not know how these Snellman's are related to J.V. Snellman, that you can find on older finnsh money, but Iread thatall Snellman's here in Finland are all related, they have used dna to test it. You here see titles like student and lady's used (Mademoiselle is from french language, I am not sure if I translate the Mademoiselle correct because thing are not the same today, but any how it is a woman from a higherclass, because she was the priest H.R. Aspelin's wife). Johan Petter Snellman was [in] 1835, [a student of the] study to priest, ready 1837,he was later also priest in Kuotane, he has also working in Alavus.3 Contact has been made with Seppo E. Järvinen in Finland and he found the following in the church records in Kuortane which he believes may be our Martin Valle and Alexander Wali.
